After a long hiatus, I played the game of Shuttle yesterday. Not may times in your life you get so nostalgic and exited at the same time. Yesterday was one of them. I happened to be one of those old timers who never got his timing right. Badminton, of course is more of a wrist play and mind game, rather than an aggressive game. Who else but the gentleman, the elderly person who was seated next to me would agree. After all he has seen more shuttle years than we all could.
I opened my game with a stiff wrist and a bad timing. Generally I was not a strategist or thinker, but I used to make up for it by covering the court, a la Michael Chang. During school and college days, it was a different ball game altogether. You were up to date on the trends, fit like a fiddle and played regularly. I still remember, when I used to play for the Baroda Gymkhana club and ONGC clubs, not a single game was played without a Bet.
Enter 2006; I am here, being hit all over the court, running aimlessly. Nevertheless, the game yesterday brought me back to all that I was missing, the fun in UK. These guys here were amazing players, with loads of stamina and power. This guy, Aldrin, I must confess, is a real power hitter. His reflexes are clever. Eyes sharp as a Hawk.
Sudha, one of my flat mates in Turret House, did play well, considering that she’s three months old in this trade. Vandy, I never mentioned…played well as I know, she ‘s strong in this game and can shoot killer drops. Vandy happens to be my colleague and project mate.
These indoor courts have a different appeal altogether. Here generally you need to fight out for every point. The flight of the shuttle is like that of an Albatross, gets flat in flight making it difficult for you to measure the drop. Badminton it seems is the game of the Mind and the Body and i think i definitely need to kick some ...
